Taps are available in a variety of styles.
Each tap has features especially designed to overcome specific tapping
applications. The descriptions below will assist the tap use in making
a selection of the tap needed for their specific tapping application.
High Speed Steel Hand Taps with straight flutes are designed for general purpose
hand tapping or in production machines where ground thread accuracy and performance are required.
They are suitable for tapping most materials in through or blind holes. Hand taps retain chips in the flutes
during use and work best on materials that produce chips and the swarf breaks easily.
They are also known as Straight Flute Taps.
High Speed Steel Left Hand Taps are designed to cut threads
with a left hand rotation and are commonly used in applications
where left hand studs and fasteners are needed.
High Speed Steel Metric Hand Taps
with straight flutes are designed for general purpose hand
tapping or in production machines where ground thread accuracy
and performance are required. They are suitable for tapping
most materials in through or blind holes. Hand taps retain
chips in the flutes during use and work best on materials
that produce chips and the swarf breaks easily. They are
also known as Metric Straight Flute Taps.
High Speed Steel Eight Pitch Hand Taps are classified
as coarse pitch series taps. They were originally designed for threading large diameter,
high pressure joint bolts and nuts and are now used mainly by oil related industries,
utilities, and general construction.
High Speed Steel Ten Pitch Hand Taps were designed for use
by oil pumping stations to thread sucker rod and other applications requiring quick assembly.
They are made specifically for this purpose and should not be considered the same as regular
ten pitch intermediate series tap. Also known as Sucker Rod Hand Taps.
Special Thread Hand Taps are designed for applications
where standard coarse, fine, or extra-fine thread taps
are not applicable or where design considerations require
non-standard pitches. Most sizes are available in taper,
bottoming, or plug chamfer. When taper or bottoming chamfer
taps are not available in size ordered, plug chamfer
taps will be substituted to complete order.

The British Standard Whitworth Thread form is a coarse thread and its use is
similar to the UNC or NC Thread. The sides of the thread form an angle of 55° with
one another.
The British Standard Fine Thread form is a fine thread and its use is similar
to the UNF or NF thread series. The sides of the thread form an angle of 55° with
one another
The British Association Thread form is an extra
fine thread and its use is similar to the NEF Thread
series. The side of the thread form an angle of 47.5° with
one another.
Automotive Rethreading Taps are used to repair and clean
out damaged internal threads without undercutting good threads.
Good for removing nicks and burs. They are not designed for cutting
new threads or renewing hardened threads.
Drill/Taps are designed to drill and tap a threaded hole up to two times diameter
in one operation. The tap section has ground threads and a bottoming chamfer
for easier tapping. They are designed to operate at speeds between the normal
tapping and drilling speed for the specific type of material it is used in.
High Speed Steel (STI) Screw Thread Insert Taps are designed
to thread a hole that will only accommodate a helical coil
wire screw thread insert. STI taps produce a slightly oversized
pitch diameter to accept a helical coil
wire screw thread insert of the same nominal size and pitch.
They are used primarily to repair damaged threads in soft materials
but can be used to tap most materials.
High Speed Steel (STI) Screw Thread Insert Spiral Point Taps
are designed to thread a hole that will only accommodate
a helical coil wire screw thread insert. STI taps produce
a slightly oversized pitch diameter to accept a helical
coil wire screw thread insert of the same nominal size
and pitch. The spiral point tap style is preferred for threading
deep holes greater than 1-1/2 inch tap diameter in soft or stringy
materials.
Spiral point taps are ideal for machine tapping through holes or
blind holes with adequate bottom clearance. They are called "Gun Taps" because
they shoot the chips ahead of the tap. This also reduces loading
and clogging in the flutes.

Oversize Spiral Point Taps are used primarily
where a piece will be plated or heat treated after
tapping. They are also used when tapping plastics
or zinc alloys where it is difficult to maintain
the proper tapped hole size because of abrasion or
shrinkage.
Cobalt CNC Spiral Point Taps are designed for tapping difficult applications
such as heat treated steels up to 45 RC, tool steels, and other tough alloys.
The were specifically developed for use on CNC equipment.
Spiral Point Pulley Taps are used for tapping the hubs of pulleys for oil caps
or set screws. The long shank is also ideal for reaching holes inaccessible with
standard length taps. Thread length is the same length as a standard hand tap.

holes inaccessible with standard length taps. Thread length is
the same length as a standard hand tap. Tap shanks will not follow
through on sizes below 7/16".
Nut taps, as the name implies, were designed for tapping nuts. Now most large
production nut tapping jobs are done with bent shank nut taps. These taps are
now used mainly for deep hole tapping where the work requires a tap with a long
undercut shank and greater thread length.
Thread Forming Taps are designed for cold forming threads in ductile materials
such as aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, low carbon steels, and 303, 303 stainless
steels. They displace metal rather than remove it, therefore, countersinking
before or after tapping is recommended.
High Speed Steel Tandem Acme Thread Taps are designed with
a roughing and finishing section to produce threads from a 10
degree to 30 degree included angle in a single pass without a leadscrew. The last few threads
on the roughing section act as a guide for the finishing section,
which corrects the thread angles and size. The original purpose
of Acme threads was to convert rotary motion to traversing motion
on machine leadscrews, valves, jack lift screws, drive gears
and other mechanisms where heavy loads are encountered. They
have four flutes and are to be used for through holes only. Designed
to prduce a class 2G thread fit.

10 degree to 30 degree included angle in a single pass without
a leadscrew. The last few threads on the roughing section act as
a guide for the finishing section, which corrects the thread angles
and size. Spiral Fluted Tandem Acme Thread Taps have continuous
spriral flutes to lift and discharge chips in deep holes. They
have black steam oxided flutes to improve finish and produce a
class 2G thread fit.
Taperlock Thread Plug Gauges are designed for inspecting internal threads for rejection or acceptance of the finished threaded product.
The GO end (member) is longer than the NO GO (H1) end and has a chip groove to clean out debris such as chips and dirt. Taper Shank Thread Plugs are designed to lock into taper holes in the handle.
Tap sizes #6 through 1" are standard length taps made to table
302 metal cutting tool institute standards. Sizes 1-1/16 and over
made in two lengths. Course pitches are made to longer length (Table
#302) and fine pitches are made in a shorter length (Table #303).
Most sizes are available in taper, bottoming, or plug chamfer.
When taper or bottoming chamfer taps are not available in size
ordered. Plug chamfer taps will be substituted to complete order.
High Speed Steel Left Hand Thread Taper Pipe Taps are designed
to cut taper pipe threads with a left hand rotation and are used
in applications where left hand pipe fittings are needed. Left
hand threads are also used to secure rotating parts where regular
rotation would tighten the coupling.
High Speed Steel 6" and 12" Long Taper Thread Pipe Taps have an
extended shank for use where extra reach is needed. They are designed
for tapping ferrous and non-ferrous fittings used to connect pipes
carrying fluids or gases. They require a sealant such as teflon
tape or pipe joint compound to prevent leakage of fluids or gases.
Micrograin Solid Carbide Taper Pipe Taps are designed
to tap pipe fittings made of difficult to machine materials and tough work hardening
metals such as stainless steel, titanium alloys, Iconel, powdered metals, cast iron,
plastics, and steels up to Rockwell hardness C45. Use when high speed steel taper
pipe taps (NPT) cannot handle the job. Solid Carbide Taper Pipe Taps (NPT) have
a taper chamfer and must have a rigid setup for use.
